BALLHORN
RECORDS

A label for unique productions

In an almost unmanageable market of recordings, with my label I’d like to produce music which is rarely heard, making it accessible to listeners, whether it’s unusual instrumentation, unknown works or rarely played composers.
Recordings for “Ballhorn-Records” are made in out of the ordinary places.
For example, the duo CD with Mika Yonezawa and Kleif Carnarius, produced in 2014/2015, was recorded in the village church in Groß Glienicke near Berlin. Reproducing the specific sound of this very particular space as exactly as possible is a big, but crucial challenge for me. The actual acoustic is of vital importance for the special quality of the listening experience.

With time, the technical implementation of the recording has led me to an approach which continues that idea of the distinctive:
A simple laptop, high quality converters and preamplifiers and a few “old” microphones, which contribute to a very beautiful and high quality sound. Right at the beginning of a recording it becomes clear whether the sound quality will be very high or “normal”, and whether through integrating the musicians’ sound concepts and an unusual arrangement of microphones that level can be made to stand out.

In addition to that, I also re-engineer recordings.
A live recording, a recording of a rehearsal, made quickly with simple recording equipment, but which is worth listening to. With a few careful procedures, almost any recording can be revised to make it rewarding to listen to.
